January 2019 marks the confluence of two landmark events: (1) the beginning of the next 75 years of the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP)’s history as a key influencer of the health of individual patients and populations through optimization of medication use and (2) the launch of ASHP’s partnership with Oxford University Press (OUP) to publish the journal.

It is fitting at this monumental point in AJHP’s history that the January 15 issue also contains the 2019 ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Forecast Report,1 which once again addresses many of the most challenging issues that are influencing health and healthcare delivery in the United States. As in previous publications of the report, the authors of the 2019 Pharmacy Forecast Report have developed recommendations that are rooted in the “wisdom of the crowd” of panelists, whose number was nearly doubled for the current report to ensure inclusion of perspectives from a broader and more diverse group of pharmacy leaders. The 2019 Forecast Report includes 41 recommendations on topics ranging from education and workforce to ethical challenges to patient empowerment. These recommendations also address perennial topics in the health policy dialogue, including the role of medications in the delivery and subsequent costs of healthcare, the intractable opioid crisis, technology and informatics advances, and disruptive forces that are likely to affect health and healthcare delivery.
